Why rules beat feelings

4 min · All levels · Discipline · Free

Losses feel twice as bad as gains feel good.

That bias is consistent and well-documented. It pushes traders to move stops, hold losing trades too long, and cut winners before target. The solution is not willpower. It is removing the decision from the moment you are least objective.

The difference rules make over 40 trades.

Two traders, same setups, in an illustrative example. The one who followed rules finished +18%. The one who traded on feel finished -30%. The gap is not skill. Both saw the same charts. It is consistency of execution.

This one is an animated diagram in the app. See it in Vero.

Write the plan before the trade.

A pre-trade plan records four things: entry trigger, stop loss level, target, and position size. Once the trade is open, these are facts, not decisions. Write it in your journal before you place the order. You made the call while calm. Honor it while emotional.

Price hits your stop. What does a rule-based trader do?

  1. Add to the position
  2. Exit as planned
  3. Move the stop lower to give it more room

B. Exit as planned. The stop was set when you were objective. Moving it after a loss is an emotional override.
