The trade you almost did not log

4 min · All levels · Free

The trades you skip logging are often the most instructive.

Most traders log their setups faithfully and skip the exceptions: the revenge trade, the FOMO entry, the position held past every rule. Those skipped entries are exactly where the real patterns live.

The gap between the curves lives in unlogged trades.

The curves are illustrative. The WITH RULES curve assumes every rule was followed and every trade was logged. The NO RULES curve is what happens when exceptions go unrecorded and unchallenged. The uncomfortable trades are the ones that widen that gap.

This one is an animated diagram in the app. See it in Vero.

A highlight reel is not a data set.

Logging only your clean trades gives you a journal that shows your best behavior. It tells you nothing about why certain weeks go wrong. The uncomfortable trades, logged honestly, are what eventually close the gap between your rules and your execution.

You took a trade outside your rules and it worked, making 2R. Should you log it?

  1. Only if it changes your rules going forward
  2. No, it does not reflect your actual process
  3. Yes, and note clearly that it was a rule violation that happened to work

C. Yes, and note clearly that it was a rule violation that happened to work. Logging a rule violation that won is just as important as logging one that lost. Both show you what you actually do under pressure.
